Project Overview

Climate-Resilient Irrigation for Northern and Southern Kyrgyzstan

The Ala-Buga River valley in Kyrgyzstan's Naryn Region sits at 1,880 to 2,140 m, where farming depends on a pumped canal system commissioned in 1991. Its headworks, intake and gates have deteriorated, and climate-driven changes to glacier-fed river flows are adding pressure on supply. The scheme is a sub-component of the EBRD-financed Kyrgyz Republic Climate Resilience Water Supply Project, co-financed by the European Union.

Since March 2026, Libanconsult, in joint venture with K.S. Solutions, has been PIU support, design development and construction supervision consultant to the Water Resources Service. The team has verified the existing detailed design, carried out topographic and geotechnical spot-checks and prepared EBRD-compliant tender documents.

Lot 1 reconstructs the 14.81 km MK-2 canal, with 13.49 km of interceptor canals and 29 km of buried HDPE irrigation network on 942 ha of new land. Lot 2 rehabilitates 3.82 km of the MK-1 canal and extends it by 14.43 km, with 22.25 km of interceptor and escape canals and 40 km of on-farm network on 1,423 ha of new land. Rehabilitation of the headworks, intake and pumping station completes the package.

The scheme will secure supply to existing farmland and bring some 2,400 ha of new land under irrigation in one of the country's highest farming valleys.
