Lebanon Irrigation Infrastructure Programme

Lebanon's irrigation infrastructure has long been undersized for its agricultural potential and strained further by climate variability and the pressure the Syrian refugee influx placed on rural water systems. International partners have invested in rehabilitating and expanding hill lakes and canal networks nationwide.

Libanconsult has delivered this work across four programmes: the ESFD contract for design and supervision of hill lakes and irrigation canals; a KfW-financed UNDP contract for irrigation canals and infrastructure; an EU-financed WeWorld-GVC contract covering irrigation canals in North East Bekaa; and a KfW-financed UNDP long-term agreement for Environmental Impact Assessments of irrigation ponds.

The works include hill lakes at Beit Younes (50,000 m3) and El Qaa (100,000 m3), 6 km of irrigation canals in Donniyeh, rehabilitation of spring and reservoir structures with a new irrigation scheme at Ain Ebel, solar pumping systems of 30 kW and 60 kW at Jbaa, irrigation canal networks across the Bekaa, North and South governorates, and up to ten irrigation ponds of 10,000 to 40,000 m3 each. Services spanned survey, geotechnical investigation, hydrological and hydraulic studies, preliminary and detailed design, tender documentation, environmental and social assessment and construction supervision.

The programme has strengthened agricultural water security across three governorates and supported host communities carrying the weight of the refugee crisis.
