Berka Zerga Old Dump Closure and Rehabilitation

The Berka Zerga old dump was one of the major environmental liabilities of northeastern Algeria. Decades of uncontrolled disposal had left a legacy site with unmanaged leachate and biogas threatening surrounding communities and the coastal environment.

Libanconsult prepared the closure and rehabilitation design in 2007, then supervised the works from 2013 to 2018 for the Ministry of Environment and Renewable Energies under the National Agency for Solid Waste, covering leachate and biogas engineering, construction supervision and environmental oversight.

The works capped a 200,000 m2 operational footprint with VLDPE geomembrane, installed leachate extraction and collection, and biogas collection and incineration rated at 500 Nm3/h.

The rehabilitation removed one of northeastern Algeria's most prominent environmental hotspots, protecting groundwater and cutting odour and methane emissions from a site left uncontrolled for decades.
