Blantyre Recycling Facility and Controlled Landfill

Blantyre is growing fast, and its waste services have not kept pace. The Blantyre Water Board is implementing a solid waste programme alongside its water and sanitation mandate to close the gap.

Libanconsult has delivered the assignment since 2025 for the Blantyre Water Board.

Scope runs from a strategic assessment of existing waste systems and preparation of a Solid Waste Management Plan - covering collection, transport, transfer, recycling, disposal and resource recovery, with infrastructure, policy, financing and stakeholder recommendations - through feasibility studies, detailed design and tender documents for a Controlled Landfill (CET) and a sorting and composting centre, to FIDIC construction supervision of the works.

Blantyre will have engineered landfilling and sorting capacity operating under a city-wide plan rather than ad hoc disposal.
