Hamici Sorting and Landfill Facilities

The Wilaya of Algiers needed engineered capacity for the growing volumes of municipal solid waste produced in and around the capital. The Hamici facility, in the Maktaa El Kheira zone, was developed as the metropolitan area's long-term disposal anchor.

Libanconsult prepared the site research and detailed studies between 2007 and 2009, then supervised, controlled and monitored construction from 2010 through 2016 for the Ministry of Urban Planning and Environment, carrying quality, schedule and environmental oversight across all works.

The first phase covers a 1,100,000 m2 dump area with 2 Mt of capacity, served by a combined biological and membrane leachate treatment plant producing 80 m3/day of permeate, biogas capture, drainage and site infrastructure. Site research established 80,000 m2 of dedicated inert-waste capacity and an aggregate landfill capacity of up to 10 Mt across the full development.

Hamici gives the Wilaya of Algiers up to 10 Mt of engineered disposal capacity, enough to serve the capital region for decades.
