Hazzerta Waste Collection Optimisation

In 2020 Hazzerta generated roughly 826 tonnes of municipal solid waste (2.26 T/day), collected and hauled to Zahle's solid waste facility using more than 500 bins and two vehicles - a compactor and a pickup for the narrow roads. As the Lebanese economic crisis eroded municipal finances, that operation became an increasing burden.

Libanconsult delivered the collection optimisation assignment in 2022 for UNDP.

The work used GIS-based data collection and spatial analysis to optimise bin placement and collection routes, cutting fuel use and vehicle time, and recalibrated collection frequency against actual waste generation patterns. Municipal delegates and the collection team were trained on the new system.

Hazzerta operates a route-optimised collection model with trained staff, holding service coverage while reducing the cost of running it.
