Jbaa Hill Lakes, Irrigation Canals and Solar Pumping
Jbaa, a rural community in South Lebanon, depends on groundwater wells and surface storage to support local agriculture. The ESFD/CDR programme to build hill lakes and upgrade irrigation canals included a solar component to power the pumping, cutting energy costs and keeping the system running for farmers.
Libanconsult delivered the full scope over a 12-month contract in 2016-2017: design and supervision of the hill lakes and irrigation canals, and detailed design and supervision of the two integrated solar PV pumping systems.
The solar scope comprises a 60 kWp system powering the Jbaa Well Pump and a 30 kWp system powering the Jbaa Lake Pump, 90 kWp in total. Both were designed to drive pump loads directly, eliminating diesel at these pumping points and integrating with the hill lake and canal infrastructure.
Jbaa's farmers gained reliable irrigation water at low running cost, with the pumping that delivers it taken off diesel entirely.
