Niamey Landfill, Sorting and Composting Facilities

Rapid urbanisation is outpacing Niger's waste management capacity, with no systematic national policy or infrastructure in place. Niamey generates 300,000 tons of waste a year for 1.4 million inhabitants; collection is only partly covered by municipal services and private operators, and disposal takes place across seven unofficial dumpsites, several in open ground near sensitive areas.

Libanconsult has been delivering the Phase 1 design of the city's solid waste programme for PIDUREM since 2025.

The assignment covers topographic and geotechnical surveys and preliminary (APS) and detailed (APD) design for three facilities: the Boubon Landfill, the Koubia Sorting-Transfer Centre, and a composting unit with its access road. Libanconsult also validates the operational and financial guidelines underpinning the Design-Build-Operate contract, and prepares the tender documents.

Once built, the three facilities will give Niamey its first engineered waste chain - transfer, sorting, composting and controlled disposal - under a DBO structure designed to keep it operating.
