Ouled Fayet Dumpsite Closure and Rehabilitation

Algiers inherited serious environmental liabilities from decades of uncontrolled dumping. The Ouled Fayet site, 250,000 m2 on the western edge of the capital, was among the worst, threatening groundwater and neighbouring communities through unmanaged leachate and biogas.

Libanconsult delivered the upgrading study in 2008, then supervised the closure and rehabilitation works for the Wilaya of Algiers Directorate of Environment.

The works capped 250,000 m2 with VLDPE geomembrane, installed leachate pumping, capture and treatment at 160 m3/day, biogas extraction and incineration rated at 3,000 Nm3/h, 400 lm of HDPE runoff drainage pipe and 3,800 lm of trapezoidal drainage channels. The 2008 study additionally addressed landfill area extension and the treatment of historic waste to modern standards.

The rehabilitation removed one of the last major uncontrolled dumps around Algiers, protecting groundwater, cutting odour and methane emissions and returning public amenity to the capital's western edge.
