Waste Management in Lebanon's Protected Areas

The STEPping up Nature Reserves Capacity (STEP4Nature) project works to improve management of Lebanon's Protected Areas, tackling solid waste within the reserves themselves. It contributes to Lebanon's National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP 2030) through reserve improvement, site rehabilitation, ecosystem assessment, biodiversity research and governance reform.

Libanconsult delivered the solid waste workstream between 2022 and 2024 for UNDP.

Scope covered specification and procurement of waste management materials and infrastructure suited to ecologically sensitive settings, and delivery of capacity-building and awareness campaigns for reserve staff and surrounding communities.

The work cut waste pressure on Lebanon's Protected Areas and left reserve teams equipped and trained to sustain the practice, in line with NBSAP 2030.
