Al-Zyhimi Flood Protection Dams

Wadi Al Zyhimi in Al Batinah South is exposed to sudden, destructive flash floods driven by cyclonic events, putting downstream communities, farmland and coastal infrastructure at recurring risk. The Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources programmed a long-term flood protection response.

Libanconsult has been the engineering partner across two mandates: feasibility study review and detailed design (2012-2015), and construction supervision of the Z4c and Z1 dams from 2025, acting as Team Leader with a panel of dam, irrigation, hydrogeology and water resources specialists.

The scheme comprises Z1, an RCC dam 261 m long and 43 m high, and Z4c, an earthfill dam 660 m long and 20 m high. Scope covered topographic and geological survey, geotechnical investigation, hydrological and hydraulic studies, flood routing and dam break analysis, preliminary and detailed design, environmental and social studies, tender documentation, and construction supervision including quality assurance of earthworks, spillway and outlet structures.

Once built, the two dams will shelter Al Batinah communities from the cyclonic flooding that has repeatedly threatened them.
