Nabaa El-Safa and Barouk Wastewater Treatment Plants

The mountain villages of Nabaa El-Safa, Barouk, Fraidis, Ain Zhalta, El-Azounieh and Ain Dara sit in one of Lebanon's most ecologically sensitive landscapes, upstream of the Barouk river basin. Protecting their rivers and springs required a coordinated network and treatment package, programmed by the Council for Development and Reconstruction.

Libanconsult supervised the programme across two successive contracts for the CDR: the main supervision of networks and treatment plants (2011-2016), and a complementary contract covering design, construction and O&M of the treatment plants (2015-2016).

The works comprise approximately 53 km of wastewater networks, the Nabaa El-Safa treatment plant at 20,000 PE and the Barouk treatment plant at 8,000 PE, together with the Fraidis, Ain Zhalta, El-Azounieh and Ain Dara collection components.

Six Chouf villages now have modern sanitation, and the Barouk river basin downstream is protected from their discharge.
