Qaissamani Dam and Water Treatment Plant

Qaissamani is one of Libanconsult's longest single-site engagements, running more than two decades from original design through to commissioning and post-construction reassessment.

Libanconsult was lead consultant at every phase: complete design of the artificial lake (1996-1998, updated 2008) for the Ministry of Energy and Water; the detailed construction study (2010-2011); the environmental assessment and dam failure analysis (2013-2014); and construction supervision of the dam and its treatment plant (2014-2018), the latter three for the Council for Development and Reconstruction.

The dam is a rockfill structure of rock and alluvium, 15 m at maximum height and 620 m long, impounding 1 million m3. Ancillary works include a lateral open channel spillway sized for 50 m3/s, three water intake channels, an 800 mm outlet pipe, bottom evacuation, three derivation basins and a 12,000 m3/day water treatment plant. The 2013-2014 study delivered the dam break analysis, flood routing and downstream risk characterisation required under Lebanese environmental law.

The scheme adds 1 million m3 of storage and 12,000 m3/day of treatment capacity to its catchment, designed, studied and supervised throughout by a single consultant.
