Tripoli Wastewater Treatment Plant

Tripoli, Lebanon's second city, discharged its wastewater untreated directly into the Mediterranean for years, with serious consequences for public health and the coastal environment. A large-scale treatment plant and sea outfall was programmed under the Council for Development and Reconstruction.

Libanconsult supervised the plant and its outfall across two assignments for the CDR: the main WWTP and sea outfall supervision (2002-2012) and a parallel dedicated sea outfall supervision (2005-2007), covering construction supervision, technical assistance and shop drawing approval.

The plant treats 1,000,000 Population Equivalent using a medium-concentration activated sludge process, with sludge incineration and electricity production. The dedicated sea outfall is 1,650 m long at 1,400 mm diameter, sized for 5 m3/s.

The scheme ended untreated discharge from Lebanon's second city and remains among the largest wastewater facilities in the country.
