Wadi Rijma Flood Protection Dams

Wadi Rijma is subject to intense flash flooding driven by cyclonic events, threatening downstream communities, farmland and infrastructure in Muscat and the eastern Sultanate. A scheme of large earthfill flood protection dams was developed under the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources.

Libanconsult reviewed the feasibility studies and prepared the detailed design between 2012 and 2015.

The scheme comprises two earthfill dams: R5, 1,850 m long and 25 m high, and R2a, 2,480 m long and 25 m high. Scope covered review of the existing feasibility studies, topographic and geological survey, geotechnical investigation, hydrological and hydraulic studies with dam break analysis, preliminary and detailed design, environmental and social assessment, and full tender documentation including bill of quantities.

The Ministry holds a tender-ready scheme placing over 4 km of flood embankment across the Wadi Rijma catchment.
